To photograph the sunset from Camlica Tower, book an entry slot about an hour before sunset, stand on the west-facing side of the glass-enclosed observation decks and press your lens against the glass to cut reflections. The decks are on the 33rd and 34th floors, 148.5 and 153 metres above the ground, and you can stay for up to 1.5 hours, which is enough for golden hour, the sunset itself and the blue hour that follows.

Where does the sun set when seen from Camlica Tower?
The tower stands on Çamlıca Hill on the Asian side, so the sun always sets across the Bosphorus over the European side of the city. Its exact direction changes with the seasons: in winter the sun goes down towards the south-west, roughly over the historic peninsula, which gives silhouettes of domes and minarets; in summer it sets much further north, towards the north-west beyond the Bosphorus bridges. Around the equinoxes in March and September it sets close to due west.
When should you book your ticket?
Sunset in Istanbul moves by about three hours over the year, from around 17:35 in December to around 20:40 in late June, and Turkey stays on the same time zone all year. Check the sunset time for your date and book an entry slot about 60 minutes earlier. In winter you will still have hours before the 22:00 closing; in early summer the sunset comes only about an hour before closing, so a late-afternoon slot is essential. How do you avoid reflections on the glass?
- Put the lens or phone right against the glass; a gap of even a few centimetres lets reflections in.
- A soft rubber lens hood pressed to the glass works well for cameras.
- Wear dark clothing, or shade the lens with your hand or a jacket, especially after sunset when the interior lights are on.
- Look for a clean patch of glass and move along the deck if the glass in front of you is smudged.
Which camera and phone settings work best?
With a phone, tap on the bright sky to set exposure, then lower the exposure slightly so the colours do not burn out; switch to night mode once the sun has gone. With a camera, an aperture of around f/5.6 to f/8 and a low ISO work in golden hour; use exposure compensation of about −0.3 to −1 when the sun is in the frame, and raise the ISO as the light fades. A wide lens captures the whole skyline, while a short telephoto compresses the domes, bridges and ships against the setting sun.
Can you use a tripod?
The decks are indoor public spaces and are often busiest at sunset, so a full-size tripod is impractical. A small tabletop support or a soft bag resting against the glass is a better way to keep the camera steady. If you plan a professional or commercial shoot, check with the tower management in advance.
What can you photograph at sunset?
Classic subjects are the silhouette of the historic peninsula in winter, the Bosphorus bridges as their lights come on, ships crossing the strait and the layered hills of the European side. Stay for the blue hour, about 20 to 40 minutes after sunset, when the city lights and the last colour in the sky are in balance; see night views from Camlica Tower. For a dinner view, the restaurant floors are on the 39th and 40th floors; see prices and opening hours.
Common mistakes
- Arriving at the moment of sunset. Security and the lift take time; arrive about an hour before.
- Expecting an open-air terrace. The decks are enclosed by glass, so reflections, not wind, are the main problem.
- Planning a Monday visit. The tower is closed on Mondays.
